Ion Chromatography Applications
Many examples of the application of ion chromatography are available from the manufacturers of ion chromatographic apparatus and columns. All have an extensive library of applications that, for the most part, they are willing to share. The applications chosen here are therefore either selected to illustrate the use of basic phase systems, give examples where ion chromatography is an important control technique in industry or has some particular unique characteristic to merit its inclusion
The Separation of Some Monovalent and Divalent Cations
The separation was carried out on Altech Universal Cation Column 10 cm long 4.6 mm in diameter using a mobile phase consisting of 2mM tartaric/1mM oxalic at a flow rate of 1 ml/min. The separation is shown in figure 30.

It is seen that a good separation of the two different valency cations is obtained. This type of column can be used very effectively for trace metal analysis on the one hand, and the analysis of plating bath electrolytes on the other. This separation was carried out employing an adsorbed ion exchanger on a reverse phase column.
