It is a steroid naturally produced in the adrenal glands, gonads and placenta, is a metabolic product of progesterone and 17-hydroxypregnenolone and is a cortisol precursor. It is most frequently measured in blood serum to test for adrenal steroid deficiency. It is most often measured using HPLC techniques.
