Analytes - vitamin D2

Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol): CAS No. 50-14-6, C28H44O, molecular weight 396.65, boiling point sublimes, melting point 116.5°C, vapor pressure 0.00mm Hg at 25°C, non flammable, slightly water soluble is a white crystalline solid. It is an essential nutrient that acts to maintain normal concentrations of calcium and phosphate in plasma by facilitating their absorption by the small intestine, to enhance their mobilization from bone and to decrease their excretion by the kidney. Ergosterol, which is present in plants, is the provitamin for Vitamin D2, which is prepared from ergosterol by UV irradiation in a suitable solvent. D2 is can also be obtained from yeast that synthesize it from simple sugars such as glucose. Ergocalciferol is indicated for prevention and treatment of Vitamin D2 deficiency states. Vitamin D2 deficiency may occur as a result of inadequate nutrition, intestinal malabsorption, or lack of exposure to sunlight, but does not occur in healthy individuals receiving an adequate balanced diet and exposure to sunlight. It is most frequently measured in food, plasma and urine using, colorimetric and spectrophotometric methods as well as by reversed phase HPLC.
