carbon tetrachloride: CAS No. 56-23-5, CCl4, molecular weight 153.82, boiling point 76.8°C, density 1.59gm/mL, vapor pressure 115mm Hg at 25°C, flash point none, autoignition temperature none, slightly water soluble is a heavy colorless liquid used as a solvent for oils, fats, lacquers, varnishes, rubber waxes, resins, a starting material in the manufacture of organic compounds, in metal degreasing and as a grain fumigant. Formerly used as dry cleaning agent and fire extinguisher. It is most frequently measured in water, air and soil to comply with environmental regulations. Due to its volatility, it is most often measured using GC/ECD, ELCD and GC/MS methods specified by regulatory agencies like the U.S. EPA.
