One of the possibly more exciting applications for small bore columns and low dispersion instrumentation is in the biochemical and biomedical areas, an example of which is blood and blood serum analysis. Using chromatgraphic techniques, the low molecular weight materials in blood, including drugs and their metabolites, can be determined directly from the blood or serum sample without the need for complex and lengthy sample preparation. An example of a chromatogram of the low molecular weight materials in a blood serum sample is shown in figure 31.
