The two solutes, anisole and nitrobenzene, are not well retained by the same phase system in a chromatographic column. In fact, on a silica gel column packed with the same silica and chromatographed with the same solvent mixture, anisole and nitrobenzene are eluted at capacity ratio (k') values of 2.4 and 4.7 respectively.
