Most scanners are constructed so that they are suitable for scanning both TLC plates and also electrophoretic stains and will normally deal with objects 200 x 200 mm in size. Most commercial instruments will allow the spot to be monitored by either reflected light, emitted light or transmitted light. The wavelengths available range from 190 nm to 800 nm and scanning speeds as fast as 100 mm/s are available. The spatial resolution can be selected from 25 to 200 mm. A diagram of the optical layout of the CAMAG TLC scanner is shown in figure 20 and would be typical of a TLC scanner.
