The Conditions for Chromatographic Separation

The retention volume for two solutes (A) and (B), will be given as follow,

                          Vr(A) = Vm + K(A)VS  + VE                         (17)

and                        Vr(B) = Vm + K(B)VS  + VE                        (18)

The corrected retention volumes will be,

                             V'r(A) =  K(A)VS                                         (19)

and                        V'r(B) =  K(B)VS                                          (20)

For two solutes (A) and(B) to be separated their retention volumes must differ, i.e.,

                      Vr(A)  < > Vr(B)    and     Vr(A)  ≠ Vr(B)
