An example of a very simple fixed-wavelength detector, suitable for use in preparative chromatography, is shown in figure 13. This detector was invented by Miller and Strusz (8) and was originally manufactured by GOW-MAC Instruments. In the device shown in figure 13, the column eluent passes through a delivery tube and over a supporting plate that is either very thin, or made of fused quartz, so that adequate UV light can penetrate and reach the photo cell situated on the other side of the plate.
